Non Wild Card SSL vs Wild Card SSL
An SSL Certificate is used to pass information over the web thru a secure connection, preventing access to the information by those not authorized. This can include personal information such as social security numbers and credit cards, etc.
An SSL certificate will be setup by your server administrator. The administrator will setup one of 2 main types, Non Wild Card SSL and Wild Card SSL.
Non Wild Card SSL
This SSL is used when just a single domain needs to be offer an encrypted connection. (Ex. www.yourdomain.com or yourdomain.com)
Wild Card SSL
This SSL is used when you want a single domain AND subdomains to offer encryption. (Ex. yourdomain.com and sub1.yourdomain.com)
Your web developer will be able to advise you on which type of SSl will work best. Wild Card SSL’s are typically more expensive.
